Dumbo Rat Tricks

The term tricks is actually a bit of a misnomer. In fact what you are doing when training your pet dumbo rat is actually teaching them to demonstrate their innate abilities when asked to do so. Teaching this behavior to your pet rats isn't overly difficult and you'll find that the little guys are actually quite intelligent!

Can rats learn tricks at any age?

Yes! Unlike the old saying "you can't teach an old dog new tricks", older rats learn just as well as younger rats. Looks like dogs might be the more stubborn of the two!

What can dumbo rats be trained to do?

Pet dumbo rats can be trained to:

  • Litter where instructed
  • Stand up when you call them
  • Come when called
  • Perch on your shoulder
  • Fetch objects on command
  • and much more!

How long does it take to train a dumbo rat to do a "trick"?

There is no exact answer for this. Rats are individuals and learn at different paces, much like people. Instead, it's important to remember that training your pet dumbo rat is meant to be a fun and relaxing experience for both owner and rat. Unless you're on a tight deadline to get your traveling circus rat show up and running, take your time and enjoy the process!

Litter Training

Pet rats are very clean creatures. You may have noticed that they constantly clean themselves. They also show a behavioral pattern of “assigning a bathroom” in a specific corner or area in the cage.

In order to encourage this behavior early on, you may want to try these simple steps:

  1. Determine the area in the cage where your rats usually go to “do their business.” Place a tray with some litter there to make the area smell like rat bathroom.

  2. Clean up any litter that is NOT within the area of the rat bathroom you have established, and perhaps place some fresh beddings there. This is to make your pet rats distinguish the “bathroom” from the “living room/bedroom”.

  3. Place your pet rats in this bathroom area to pee. If they move anywhere else in their cage to pee, reprimand them verbally by saying “No.” If they do their business successfully in the established area, acknowledge this and reward them. This repetitive reward and punishment method will make them soon understand what it is they must do.
